NOLLYWOOD

Nollywood is said to be the third largest film industry in the world., releasing onto the home video market approximately 1000 movies each year.

such abundance is possible since films are realized in conditions that would make most of the western independent directors cringe. movies are produced and marketed in the space of a week: low cost equipment, and very basic scripts, actors cast the day of the shooting. ''real life'' locations. despite the improvised production process, they continue to fascinate audiences.

In Africa, Nollywood movies are rare instance of self representation in the mass media.

The continent has a rich tradition of story telling that has been expressed abundantly through oral and written fiction, but has never been conveyed through the mass media before.

Movies tell stories that appeal to and reflect the lives of its public: stars are local actors: plots confront the viewer with familiar situations of romance, comedy, witchcraft, bribery, prostitutions, the narrative is overdramatic, deprived of happy endings, tragic. The aesthetic is loud, violent, excessive; nothing is said, everything is shouted.

in my travels through west africa, i have been intrigued by this distinct style in constructing a fictional world where everyday and unreal elements intertwine.

By asking a team of actors and assistants to recreate nollywood myths and symbols as if they were on movie sets, i initiated the creation of a very similar reality.

my vision of the film industry's interpretation of the world results in a gallery of hallucinatory and unsettling images.

The tableaux of the series depict situations clearly surreal but that could be real on a set:; futhermore, they are rooted in the local symbolic imaginary. The boundaries between documentary and fiction become very fluid, and we are left wondering whether our perceptions of the real world are indeed real.

Breaking News: EX GOV OF BORNO STATE MUSTAPHA AMIN DIES

Elder statesmen and former governor of borno state, group capt. mustapha amin (rtd) is dead.

He died on wednesday morning in kaduna state. LEADERSHIP gathered that funeral prayers for the ,late amin will hold this afternoon at sultan bello mosque, kaduna.

The late amin was the first governor of borno state; he served from march 1976 to july 1978 during the military regime of general olusegun obasanjo.

This was after North eastern state was divided into bauchi, borno, and gongola states. Before his appointment as governor by the supreme military council, Amin was a lieutenant colonel in the air force when appointed.

He is remembered for his attempt to stop desert encroachment, by imposing restriction on tree cutting permits.

He also made it an offense to set fires to clear the land and called for the establishment of an inland port to serve lake chad.

SIR ALEX FERGUSON RETIRES AFTER 27 YEARS AND 49 TROPHIES AT MANCHESTER UNITED

Sir Alex Ferguson has announced he will retire as manchester united manager after 27 years at the club on a day that will redefine the land scape of british football.

The 71 year ol moved to old trafford in 1986 and rebuilt united's empire in spectacular fashion winning an astonishing 49 trophies in all.

But after infamously ''quitting'' 12 years ago, he has decided to retire once and for all at the end of this season. He leaves having won won his 13th premier league trophy and reclaiming the title from the noisy neighbour's manchester city.

united's final match of the season, at west bromwich albion on may 19th, will be his 1,500th of ferguson's tenure as a manager.

having always citied his health as the primary factor in any decision to retire, the club confirmation last friday evening that ferguson, who had a heart pacemaker fitted in 2004, would undergo hip sugery in august raised fresh doubt over his determination to continue in the post.

Ferguson then arrived for work as usual on wednesday morning as he was seen driving into united's carrignton training base at 6.50 am.

Today's announcement is seemingly at odds with ferguson's programme notes last weekend, when he wrote: i don't have any plans at the moment to walk away from what i believe will be something special and worth being around to see.

Its always difficult in football to be absolutely sure of the future because the game has a habit of tripping you up, but i don't live in a fantasy world and believe we have every reason to feel confident about the future of manchester united.

Rapper, Ja Rule Released From Prison After Two Years Sentence

After spending almost 2 years in prison for attempted illegal possession and tax evasion, us rapper ja rule has been released from prison.

Ja rule was released from ray brook federal prison in new york yesterday tueday may 6th but will remain on home confinement until july 28th.

Ja Rule was sentenced to two years in prison for attempted criminal possession of a weapon and 28 months for tax evasion. He served both sentence concurrently.

Two Die As Nigerian Air Force Jet Crashes In Niger Republic, Killing Two Pilots

In a statement today, JTF spokesman, lieutenant colonel sagir musa, said that a preleminary investigatin into the incident indentified two key Boko Haram terrorist, mohammed ibn saleh and abdulkareem ibrahim, as the masterminds of the killing.

Boko haram Raid Borno Town, Leave 55 People Dead

Suspected members of Nigerian islamist sect Voko haram raided the northeastern town of Bama on Tuesday, leaving 55 people dead, the military said on tuesday.

Boko haram gunmen killed 22 police officers,14 prison officials, two soldiers and four civilians, while 13 of the group's own members died, military spokesman sagir musa told reuters.
